Asian Civilisation Museum / Empress Place Building,

I am documenting here the Empress Place Building, which today houses the 2nd wing of the Asian Civilisations Museum. The Empress Place Building was originally intended to be a courthouse, but was instead used as government offices (and was so called, Government Offices). It was constructed between 1864 and 1920, in four phases. The original section, which is closest to the Old Parliament House, was designed by J.F.A. McNair using convict labour, between 1864 and 1867.

Esplanade Bridge is a 260m long bridge across Marina Bay, at the mouth of the Singapore River. I photograph it as part of the documentation for the AsiaExplorers self-guided walking tours. The bridge is made of concrete and has seven graceful arches. The bridge carries the new eight-lane Esplanade Drive, which links the Nicoll Highway with Collyer Quay, where the financial district begins.

Raffles Hotel, founded by the Sarkies brothers who also founded the E&O Hotel in Penang, is one of the oldest and most elegant hotels in Singapore. Raffles Hotel is also one of the most famous hotels in the Orient. During the turn of the 20th Century, the Raffles Hotel is the epitome of elegance, and the watering hole for celebrities such as Joseph Conrad, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, Charlie Chaplin, Jean Harlow, Noel Coward, and Ava Gardner, to name a few.
